Note From Wyn Edwards In The U.K.
Received information from member Wyn Edwards. Wyn, the artist who has built several
beautiful 1/43 scale replicas of Indy cars such as the 1955 Sumar Streamliner, now lives
in Wales. He recently took the time to drop us a note. It said:
I will send you some Goodwood material - it’s amazing what turns up there - something new
every year. This year features Fords 100 years. I live in hope that the "Jack Adams" turbine
car which lives in Austria will make it one year, who knows? Anything seems possible. Two
years ago "Hemi Under Glass" appeared, straight out of the "Hot Rod" magazines that I read
as a teenager. I wonder if " Little Red Wagon " still exists?
What do I want to see more of in The Short Chute? - It's hard to say. It seems like just
when one topic is getting to the point of exhaustion up pops another and away you
go. But if you want a thought.........head gear - - officials wearing pith hats,
when/why?.........if you check back it seems to start after WW2. (Anyone have information
about head gear?)
New Book From Dick Wallen
Master race book maker Dick Wallen’s latest creation will be available later this year,
maybe as early as mid-September. “The ‘70’s Revolution” will follow a similar format as
the earlier beautiful books of Mr. Wallens, however this time it will be about 99% color.
Being from the generation that loved the championship dirt cars, Mr. Wallen will include
the Dirt Championships of the 1970’s in the book. Of course, 1970 was the last year of a
real National Championship that included the Champ Dirt Cars. Look for a flyer in the Fall
Short Chute.
The Rolla Vollstedt Story
Another new racing book will be available later this Fall; The Rolla Vollstedt Story,
from Portland Dirt Tracks to the Indy 500. One of America’s most innovative race car
designers has a book in his own words.
Still going strong at 80+, Rolla shares his reminiscences and secrets of building championship
race cars and lasting relationships with the men and women who drove them.
The 8 1/2” x 11”, 160 page hard cover book is illustrated with over 100 photos. Each book
individually signed by the author.
To reserve your copy send $34.95 plus $4.50 shipping and handling to:
Rolla Vollstedt, 4525 SW Lee Street, Portland, OR 97221.

"The Iron Duke"
Dr. George Peters will soon release his latest work; The Iron Duke, The Great
Racing Career of Duke Nalon. Dr. Peters, who co-authored Novi, The Legendary Indianapolis
Race Car, Volumes I and II, has announced that a biography of Duke Nalon is in the works and
completion is expected later this year.
The work was carried on with Duke’s help prior to his passing in February 2001. The study will
include not only his Indy 500 efforts but his years driving midgets and sprint cars as well.
