Andy Dunlop, 90, Was Indy Inovator
Edited from a story by Alana Baranick, Cleveland Plain Dealer
Former Indy mechanic and builder Andy Dunlop passed away this past Spring in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Scottish born,
Dunlop lived most of his life in Cleveland after moving there as a teenager.
He built his first race car at 18 in 1930. He raced the Model A on small dirt tracks until he was injured. He then built
cars and hired others to drive.
After serving on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga during WW II, he returned to racing. In 1948 Wally Stokes drove his
Dunlop Special to 27 wins in 29 contests!.
At Indianapolis he was a mainstay for several years beginning in 1952. While Chief Mechanic and builder for the Pete Salemi
Central Excavating Specials, Andy devised several innovations that made race cars faster and allowed mechanics to make repairs
more quickly. He was with Salemi until 1966.
