Racing Fraternity Deaths

Former Driver Bayliss Levrett passed away on March 13, 2003 in Reno, Nevada. He was 89 years old. Bayliss raced on the West Coast and Midwest in the 1930’s and 40’s until WW II. After the war Levrett resumed racing on the West Coast. In 1949 he traveled to Indianapolis and qualified 29th in the field. A leaking oil drain plug put him out after 52 laps. He finished in 24th position. In 1950 Bayliss started 17th and finished 27th after being forced out at 109 laps due to low oil pressure. He retired in 1952 after a practice crash at Indianapolis in which he received severe burns.

The Day Before The 500 Show

The 25th Annual National Auto Racing Memorabilia Show (The Big Show) will once again be at the Indiana Convention Center at 100 S. Capitol, next to the RCA Dome, in downtown Indianapolis. Times and dates are: Friday May 23 1:00 to 6:00 PM and Saturday May 24 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. $10 on Friday is admission, good for both days. Saturday admission is $7.

Bill Enoch's 1st Turn Gang
For the umpteenth time there will be an annual meeting of The 1st Turn Gang. From this year forward it will be known as Bill Enoch’s 1st Turn Gang in honor of our friend who passed away this past year. Attending the 5oo since 1935, Bill was always full of great stories, loved those Track Dogs and sort of felt like the father of our group as we gathered each year to enjoy “Bump Day” together. He’ll be missed by all.
Again on the last day of qualifications (May 18) at The Speedway, we will congregate in Grandstand E, Section 17 or 18, in the top two rows. We take in the action on the track and discuss racing memorabilia collecting. Putting faces to names in the club, reacquainting ourselves with friends while we listen to and tell stories and have plenty of laughs between qualifying attempts.
So, if you are at the track on Bump Day, we hope you come over to the first turn and join the gang or at least say “hi”.

Talk of Gasoline Alley
Speedway master historian Donald Davidson will once again host his annual radio show. Donald wrote: "Talk of Gasoline Alley" starts (on radio station WIBC-AM) Thursday May 1 and will be on 6-7 every night through to Friday May 23. The Network Indiana version starts Monday May 5 and continues through to Friday May 23 but is weeknights only. That one goes 7-8 and is usually on about 14 stations around the state. Qualifying coverage lasts all day long on the three time trial days and we have been known to take phone calls from time to time during lulls. Then there is the "drive home" show on race day which normally goes until 6 (PM).”
Thanks again for the information. We look forward to listening as it is part of our Month of May traditions, especially the “Drive Home Show”.

Unusual Beer Sign
Received a picture (below) and a note from member Marvin Ubelhor. Marvin wrote:
“Enclosed is a photo of recently acquired beer sign from an auction near Jasper, Indiana. It is paint behind glass with wooden frame. It is from Cook’s Brewery in Evansville, Indiana. Notice the Pagoda in background. There was another person at the auction who specializes in Cook’s beer memorabilia and he has never seen another one like it. Do any other Indy collectors possess one? It is now the centerpiece for my back bar in my Indy 500 memorabilia room.”
