$135,000 Fraud
FBI Investigating Fake Helmts
by John Darlington
It has come to the attention of the club that a number of fake racing helmets have been sold recently. The local CBS affiliate here in Indianapolis did a story about Mr. Bill Daniels and his collection of racing helmets and how, after $135,000 spent on 36 "race used" helmets, Mr. Daniels found out that at least 33 of the 36 helmets were fakes.
Mr. Daniels initially purchased these helmets through an ebay seller,
Gary McColghin, and bought more from him later, again on ebay. A fellow
club member wondered how one dealer could have access to so many different
driver helmets? It was suggested someone authenticate them. Daniels
contacted Ray Briskey and his partner who looked at all the helmets and
determined that at least 33 of the 36 were indeed fakes. Also, Bell Helmets
of Europe determined that a Michael Schumacher and an Ayrton Senna
helmet were both "poor" fakes.
The FBI is currently involved as are Penske Racing, Bell and Simpson Racing, Target Chip Ganassi Racing, Michael Andretti and Jimmy Vasser. . If you have purchased any helmets from a Gary McColghin at any time, Mr. Daniels would appreciate your contacting him via phone or email: Phone (317) 873-2146 x-104 work -home (317) 575-0900. email Wed@in-motion.net
