Old Stock Car Models

by Greg Littleton

If you subscribe to or have seen the publication “Vintage Oval Racing” then I’m sure you will agree that some of the ads are as fun as the pictures and stories of the old cars.

Recently I noticed an ad for Early Racing Classics that offers 1/25th scale models of old Stock Cars and Jalopies. This includes body and chassis components and tire and rim combinations.

For more info send a note to: 103 George Rogers Rd., Charlottesville, VA 22911 or call 804-979-7534. You may send $4.00 for their catalog.

1st Turn Gang

Once again this year you are invited to become part of The 1st Turn Gang. We will be holding our annual meeting on the Last Day of Qualifications (May 20) at the Speedway. As in past years, we will congregate in “E” Stand, Section 17 or 18, in the top two rows. We take in the action on the track and discuss racing memorabilia collecting. While putting faces to names in the club, we tell and listen to stories and have some laughs between qualifying attempts. So, if you are at the track on Bump Day and get in the first turn area, we hope you will stop by and join us, or at least say “HI”.

2000 1st Turn Gang - Front Row L-R: Jack Schroeder, Larry Ireland, Bill Ashby, Mike Weinbrecht, Greg Littleton

Back Row: Tom Rollings, Dave Goss, John Darlington, Bob Donahue, Treg Bauchert

Legends at The Speedway

For the past few years IMS has honored some of the drivers that have helped make history at the famous oval. This year, with one exception, some of the cars that can be labeled “legends” will be honored.

Here is the list of this year’s Legends:

May 9 1911 Marmon “Wasp” - winning car

May 10 1922 Duesenberg/Miller - winning car

May 11 1931 Cummins - first car to go non-stop

May 16 1941 Wetteroth/Offy - winning car

May 17 1951 Kurtis - winning car

May 18 1961 Trevis/Watson - winning car

May 19 1968 car (do not know which car)

On one day former driver Joe Leonard will be honored. He will be driving the 1968 STP Turbine Lotus Wedge that was driven by Graham Hill in the ‘68 race. He was to be honored last year but was unable to attend.
