Darlington Puts 500 Club on the Net
by Greg Littleton
On October 16, 2001 The National Indy 500 Collectors Club joined the world of cyberspace. Club President John Darlington, with technical assistance from his half-brother Jay Nyhart, created and started the web page for our club.
John says that he has adapted some things from other sites while doing cut-and-paste from old Emails and his Vice Notes articles. The page is set-up or “written” off-line and once completed, uploaded to the Net.
Using a search engine such as Yahoo, you type in ni500cc.com (lower case) and that should take you on your way to the site. Once you get there, you will need the Username (ni500cc01) and a password to access features such as the Message Board, articles and of course, The Short Chute. The Username will remain the same however a new password will appear in your Short Chute with each edition. We will always have it in the bottom right hand corner of the back page of the newsletter.
As for the future, John has several ideas and is open to your thoughts. He would like to hear what you might want to see. He is considering a “Collecting Interests List”, where members could list their collecting interests and provide a way to contact them. This could be of helpful if you were looking for something and you would like to find someone who has more information or knowledge of the item or particular area you are interested in.
One area that John has placed will probably be very handy for many of us and that is the “Add Email” site. Club members can look up another members email address. Once their email is on the site, you would need to contact John “the Webmaster” to have it removed if you so desire.
Of course, the site will virtually always be “under construction”. You should have access to The Short Chute, however it may be a while before every picture will appear.
For now John says that everything is going very well with his new creation. He really doesn’t foresee any problems at this point, however some day we may run out of space. That would be pretty far in the future, though.
